If you've been dealing with numbness, tingling, aching, or weakness that travels from your neck into your shoulder, arm, or hand, you may have heard the term Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). While it is often mistaken for a pinched nerve in the neck or even carpal tunnel syndrome, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a unique condition that involves compression of important nerves and blood vessels as they travel from the neck into the arm.
The good news is that many cases respond well to conservative care, and chiropractic treatment can play an important role in reducing symptoms and improving function.
What Is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome occurs when the nerves, arteries, or veins that travel through a narrow passageway between your neck and shoulder become compressed or irritated. This area, known as the thoracic outlet, is bordered by the collarbone, first rib, and surrounding muscles.
Three main types of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome:

What Causes Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome usually develops from a combination of factors rather than a single injury. Common causes include:
Poor posture, especially forward head posture and rounded shoulders
Repetitive overhead activities such as swimming, baseball, volleyball, or construction work
Muscle tightness in the neck, chest, or shoulders

Diagnosing Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can sometimes be challenging because its symptoms overlap with other conditions, including cervical disc injuries, rotator cuff problems, ulnar nerve entrapment, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
A chiropractor will begin with a detailed history and physical examination. This typically includes:
Evaluating posture and spinal alignment
Assessing neck, shoulder, and rib mobility
Testing muscle strength and sensation
Performing orthopedic tests designed to reproduce symptoms
Evaluating movement patterns and muscular imbalances

Can Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Be Prevented?
While not every case is preventable, maintaining good posture, staying physically active, strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blades, and taking regular breaks from prolonged sitting can significantly reduce your risk.
Athletes and individuals with physically demanding jobs should also focus on proper movement mechanics and recovery to avoid repetitive strain.
