Wash Park Chiro is delighted to announce yet another addition to our extensive selection of services: MSK ultrasound! Read more below to learn about ultrasound, how it works, what it treats, and how to schedule an MSK ultrasound appointment at Wash Park Chiro.
What Is MSK Ultrasound?
Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that provides
real-time visualization of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerves. It is an
effective tool for diagnosing soft tissue injuries, guiding rehabilitation, and monitoring
progress over time. MSK ultrasound allows for dynamic assessments during movement,
which is especially valuable for performance athletes and active populations. It also
offers a safe, radiation-free alternative to other imaging modalities and can enhance
clinical decision-making and targeted treatment planning.
How Does It Work?
Diagnostic musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images. A small handheld device called a transducer is placed on the skin, usually with a layer of conductive gel to help the sound waves travel efficiently. The transducer emits sound waves that penetrate the body and bounce off different structures. These returning echoes are interpreted by the ultrasound machine to create live, high-resolution images on a screen.
What makes MSK ultrasound particularly useful is its ability to capture dynamic movement. Unlike static imaging methods like MRI or X-rays, ultrasound can assess joints and soft tissues while the patient moves, allowing clinicians to observe things like tendon snapping, joint instability, or impingement in real time. This dynamic view can be especially helpful in diagnosing conditions that only occur during motion.
One of the key advantages of MSK ultrasound is that it’s safe, with no radiation exposure. It’s also portable, relatively affordable, and offers immediate results. These benefits make it a valuable tool in both clinical and sports medicine settings.
Conditions Treated with MSK Ultrasound:
Muscle Strains and Tears
Hamstring, quadriceps, calf (gastrocnemius-soleus complex), adductors
Tendon Pathologies
Tendonitis, tendinopathy, and partial/full-thickness tears of Achilles, rotator cuff, biceps brachii, patellar, and gluteal tendons
Ligamentous Injuries
Sprains, partial tears, and chronic laxity in structures such as the anterior talofibular ligament (ankle), medial collateral ligament (knee), and ulnar collateral ligament (elbow)
Bursitis
Subacromial-subdeltoid, trochanteric, olecranon, and prepatellar bursae
Joint Effusions and Synovitis
Fluid accumulation or inflammatory changes within the shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist, and small joints
Plantar Fasciitis
Evaluation of plantar fascia thickness, tears, or chronic inflammation
Lateral and Medial Epicondylitis
Common extensor or flexor tendon origin inflammation (tennis elbow, golfer's elbow)
Peripheral Nerve Disorders
Carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve compression), ulnar nerve entrapment at the cubital tunnel, and peroneal nerve entrapment at the fibular head
Trigger Finger (Stenosing Tenosynovitis)
Thickening of the flexor tendon sheath causing mechanical locking of the digits
Soft Tissue Masses
Differentiation of cystic versus solid masses such as ganglion cysts, lipomas, hematomas, and abscesses
Post-Surgical Surveillance
Tendon repair integrity, resolution of post-operative hematomas, and scar tissue assessment
Chronic Tendinopathies
Degenerative changes in tendons characterized by hypoechogenicity, neovascularization, and tendon thickening
