Can’t Catch Your Breath?

Living in the Mile High City’s elevation isn’t the only thing that can take our breath away. Ever experience that no matter how deep a breath you take, it still feels like you're not getting enough air? Did you know that the ability to take a deep, comfortable breath also depends on the flexibility and movement of your spine and rib cage? Much of that tension can build up in the ribs and upper back, without people realizing it, leading to some sneaky problems and symptoms.

When the mid and upper back become stiff, often from long hours of sitting, chronic stress, anxiety, asthma or past injuries, it can manifest in lifted shoulders, tightened muscles, fast or shallow breathing, and a rib cage that can’t fully expand. That restriction can strain the body and nervous system, affecting your quality of life.

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring healthy movement to the spine and rib joints, especially in the neck and upper back. Massage therapy is a strong tool that can help release the intricate and larger muscles surrounding those areas as well. When these areas move more freely, posture often improves, the chest opens up, and breathing can feel easier and more natural. This may also support the nerves that control the diaphragm, including the Phrenic Nerve, which plays a key role in how we breathe.

Each time you inhale, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, allowing the lungs to expand and fill with air. The phrenic nerve controls the diaphragm, continuously signaling this dome-shaped muscle to move. Humans have two phrenic nerves: a right that controls the right half of the diaphragm. While a left nerve controls the left half. Both originate from spinal nerves in the neck and provide the diaphragm with motor control and sensation. Even minor irritation of the phrenic nerve can trigger hiccups! However, more significant damage to this nerve may prevent the diaphragm from working properly, which can lead to serious breathing difficulties.

For people managing conditions like Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, chiropractic care and massage therapy aren’t meant to replace medical treatment. Instead, they can be a complementary approach that supports overall function and comfort.

Sometimes the changes are subtle, but meaningful. After a few visits focused on the upper thoracic spine and ribs, you may notice fuller breaths, easing of neck and upper back tension, and increased energy. When breathing improves, people often notice other benefits too. Better oxygen flow can support clearer thinking, better sleep and digestion, improved mood, and a greater sense of comfort in the body. Restoring movement to the spine simply helps the body do what it was designed to do: breathe freely.
